Snap-Frozen vs Fresh: Why Frozen Family Meals Can Be Better
“Fresh” sounds better than “frozen,” but with ready-made meals that instinct can lead you astray. A chilled meal cooked one day and eaten five days later isn't as fresh as it sounds. Here's why snap-freezing is often the better choice for busy families.
What snap-frozen actually means
Snap-freezing means a meal is frozen rapidly, right after it's cooked, while it's at its best. That locks in the flavour, texture and nutrition at the best possible moment and keeps it there until you're ready to eat.
Why it beats “fresh” chilled meals
- Frozen at its best, not slowly ageing in a fridge
- No preservatives needed, because the freezer does the work
- Keeps for up to 3 months, so nothing gets wasted
- Eat on your schedule, not before a use-by date forces your hand
- Nutrition is locked in, rather than degrading day by day
Good to know: A “fresh” chilled meal with a five-day shelf life has been losing quality since the day it was made. A snap-frozen meal tastes like it was cooked today, because in every way that matters, it was.
How we do it
Every meal is chef-prepared in our MPI-registered kitchen in Mount Maunganui, snap-frozen straight after cooking, and delivered in temperature-controlled packaging. You can browse the menu and stock your freezer with meals that are ready whenever you need them.
Getting the best from frozen meals
Keep them frozen until the day you want them. Heat straight from frozen in the microwave for 2.5–3 minutes, give it a stir, and rest for 1 minute. Once defrosted, eat within 3 days. It really is that simple.
Are frozen meals as nutritious as fresh ones?
Yes. Snap-freezing locks in nutrition while the meal is at its best. In many cases it preserves more than a “fresh” meal that's been chilled for days.
How long do the meals keep?
Up to 3 months in the freezer. Once defrosted, keep them in the fridge and eat within 3 days.
Do you use preservatives?
No. Snap-freezing means we don't need to. It's just real food, frozen while it's at its best.
Can I heat the meals straight from frozen?
Yes. Microwave from frozen for 2.5–3 minutes, stir, then rest for 1 minute. From defrosted, you can use the oven at 180°C for 15–20 minutes until piping hot. Full heating instructions are on every label.
Will freezing affect the taste or texture?
Snap-freezing protects both. Meals are frozen rapidly while they're at their best, so they taste just as they should when reheated.
