Meal Delivery After a Broken Leg or Ankle NZ
If you've broken a leg or ankle, getting good food should be one less thing to worry about. Standing at the stove on crutches or in a moclosest boot is tiring and unsafe, and hopping to the shops isn't realistic for weeks. The Family Kitchen delivers chef-made, home-style meals after a broken leg straight to your door — snap-frozen at peak freshness and shipped chilled nationwide. Keep them in the freezer, heat one from frozen in 2.5–3 minutes, and eat a proper dinner without weight-bearing on your injury. As an ACC-approved supplier (VBI718), we may also be able to help if meal support is part of your recovery plan.
Why meals after a broken leg matter for recovery
A lower-limb fracture changes daily life fast. Mobility is limited, energy goes into healing, and even simple kitchen tasks become a fall risk. Having ready meals on hand means you eat regularly and well without balancing on one leg or carrying hot pots across the room.
- No standing, chopping or carrying while you're on crutches or in a boot
- Regular, balanced meals to support the body while it heals
- Less reliance on family or flatmates for every meal
- Fewer trips to the shops during the hardest weeks
How the meals work
Our meals are cooked by chefs in our MPI-registered kitchen in Mount Maunganui, Bay of Plenty, then snap-frozen and delivered chilled in temperature-controlled packaging. They keep for up to 3 months in the freezer, so you can stock up for the whole recovery period. Heat one straight from frozen in the microwave for 2.5–3 minutes, stir, and rest for 1 minute. If you've defrosted it, oven-heat at 180°C for 15–20 minutes. Once defrosted, keep it in the fridge and eat within 3 days.
Tip: Set up a "recovery shelf" in your freezer within easy reach so you're not bending or stretching on one leg. Stock a week of meals at a time and keep the microwave nearby.
Choosing meals that suit your recovery
Everyone heals differently, and appetite can dip after an injury. We offer a wide range so you can match meals to your needs and any advice from your GP or physio, including high protein, low carb, keto, low cal, gluten free and dairy free, plus family lunch and dinner and kids meals.
- High-protein options to support you through recovery (always follow your medical advice)
- Gluten free and dairy free for specific dietary needs
- Family-sized lunch and dinner meals so the whole household eats well

ACC and meal support after a fracture
In some cases, ACC may fund meal or home support as part of an injury recovery plan. This isn't automatic and depends on your situation, so the best step is to talk to your ACC case manager or provider about what you may be eligible for. As an ACC-approved supplier (VBI718), we can help with the process once support is in place. We can't guarantee funding, and this isn't medical advice — always defer to your GP, physio or ACC provider.
